Preparing for another Ondoy
CHEERS to GMANews.tv for a proactive approach in commemorating the anniversary of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
To prepare the people in case another strong typhoon occurs, the news website came up with an interactive map of flood-prone areas and evacuation centers.
Using data from institutions and agencies such as the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the University of the Philippines’ National Institute for Geological Sciences, the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Interior and Local Government, the network marked areas in Metro Manila and nearby areas (Rizal and Bulacan) according to their susceptibility to flooding and landslides, the expected amount of flood in case of a strong typhoon, and the frequency of flood cycles.
GMANews.tv also has a directory of numbers (National Disaster Coordination Council, Meralco, Red Cross, Coast Guard) to call in case of typhoons and similar disasters (see page 29 of online special Rainy Days.
